ASPIRE2025 Launch

The Hon Tariana Turia, Associate Minister of Health, launched the ASPIRE2025 research collaboration on 22nd July – the same day as the Smokefree Environments (Controls and Enforcements) Amendment Bill was officially assented into law. See the full speech here.

After the launch, ASPIRE2025 lead researchers with the Associate Minister of Health and the Dean of the University of Otago Wellington.

ASPIRE2025 draws on two foundation documents: the Tupeka Kore Aotearoa Vision, the Smokefree Coalition of health groups adopted in 2010, and the recommendations contained in the final draft Te Ara Hiringa National Māori Tobacco Control Strategic Plan 2011–2016. Our research will help achieve the New Zealand Government’s goal of minimising tobacco use by 2025.

This whakataukī sums up our reason for launching ASPIRE2025:

Me ka moemoeaa ahau, ko au anake
Me ka moemoeaa e taatou ka taea e taatou

If I am to dream, I dream alone
If we all dream together then we shall achieve

Te Puea Herangi, CBE
